As a professional photographer, I try my very best to make my clients (mainly high school and college senior students) look their best. I know just how important it is for them to look amazing for Instagram and other social media platforms. If you are struggling to look great in pictures or are just looking for tips to transform your photos, you will want to consider some of my best photo secrets. 

1. Have a Steller Background

One of the best secrets to great images is having a beautiful background in beautiful light. There is nothing better than having the colors behind you melt into a bokeh of buttery softness. It plays a huge role in transforming the picture and letting you, the tack sharp focused subject, POP off of the picture. It is something that I love to do in all of my photoshoots. You will love the results.

2. Be More Spontaneous

The next secret that will make you look great in photos is being more natural. You need to understand that models look amazing in pictures because they move, look like they are having fun, and are spontaneous. When you can find that zone where you are having fun during your photoshoot (and it shows), that is when the image magic happens. 

3. Know Your Light Specifications

Bad lighting is possibly the worst thing to deal with when taking pictures. To get the best pictures, you need to use the right kind of natural light to your advantage. This, my friend, is not always easy. So many factors can play a role in this assessment. There are various apps that can help solve lighting problems. However, working with a professional photographer who knows what to look for is always a great way to tackle this nuance.

4. Know Your Best Angle

Ariana Grande is known for being strict about which angle of her is captured by the camera. Therefore, you might want to take a page from her book. You need to find out which angles and poses work best for you and which ones may not. The best way to practice or learn your angle is by taking selfies or practicing in front of a mirror. Try it! It’s fun!

5. Find Your Confidence 

If you want to look great in photos, you need to face the camera with confidence and feel comfortable in front of the lens.

I spend time in each my photoshoots teaching people how to pose and coach them through the whole photo-taking process. This way, once they are warmed up in front of my camera, they feel relaxed and have more fun.

6. Get Your Hair or Makeup Professionally Done

You deserve to feel spoiled. Your hair plays a huge role in how you look in pictures. Treat yourself. See your personal stylist for the special look that you want.

7. Your Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile

Any other Annie fans out there? You don’t have to smile in every image, and the over-the-top smiles look cute on kiddos, but the best thing is to have a natural and relaxed smile as your go-to expression. Even a slight giggle is perfect. It is always a great way to brighten your face and will instantly elevate the way you look.

8. Add Some Detailing

Lastly, you can add a little detailing for looking great in pictures. You can use props such as an instrument that you play, your pet horse or dog, your favorite book, or even a coffee cup to add cozy details to the scene.
