We all want to look amazing in our pictures. I know I do. Let’s be honest. It is not always easy to feel comfortable in front of a camera. The good news is that there are a few simple tips that can instantly make you look more photogenic. You can thank me later for elevating your Instagram game.

1. Know Your Good Side
If there is one lesson that we can learn from Ariana Grande, it is the fact that she knows her good side.
If you aren’t sure about yours, take a few selfies to determine which side works better for you. You might look better on your right side or your left side. Once you know your good side, you can start taking better pictures.

2. Define Your Best Features
We all have certain features that make us look good. Mine are my eyes.
As a professional photographer, I see it all the time, when you define your best features, you look more photogenic. You can always wear makeup that accents your best feature, select clothes that flatter your figure, and style your hair so it is camera ready. Flaunt your best asset to get noticed. It could be your lashes, hair, cheekbones, lips, or even the whole package.

3. Add Some Color to Your Face
Your face is a canvas waiting to be glorified. A simple tip that will always make you look more photogenic is adding some color to your face. A makeup-free look can seem flat. Instead, you can dab a bit of blush onto your face to look lively.

If you are a guy, a little shear powder can do wonders (think news anchor) to give yourself a non-shiny and finished, but not over-the-top, look.

4. Create Your Signature Pose
To stand out in the sea that is Instagram and social media, we all need to create a signature pose. See what feels comfortable to you. Practice in the mirror or with a few selfies and see what poses you are best at. Try placing your hand on your waist or in a pocket.

5. Always Select an Area That Has Good Lighting
The importance of good lighting cannot be stressed enough. This one thing can make the difference between an okay photo and a GREAT picture!

As a professional photographer, I know just how much of a difference lighting can make. Therefore, I want you to always capture those amazing selfies in areas that offer wonderful lighting. Try to look for natural lighting if possible as it can be the most flattering light when done correctly.

6. Smile like a Pro
Knowing how to smile can be an art-form. This is why you can start practicing now on how to smile like a pro.
Before you know it, you’ll have that amazing picture that can turns heads.

If you are smiling while showing your teeth (but not laughing), try placing your tongue on the roof of the mouth. Also, a natural laugh is a show-stopper for sure! Practice that too!

Always try to smile with your eyes (“smize” as Tyra Banks would say).
Most of all, try to look (and feel) relaxed and don’t not overdo it.

7. Tilt Your Head Slightly
Finally, to look like a professional model, you just need to tilt your head slightly. It will make you more photogenic without much effort. See which side you more naturally tilt toward and see how that looks in a mirror. Tweak the look until you are comfortable.
