The location where you choose to take your portraits acts as a foundation from which the rest of the picture comes to life. It enhances your photographs, providing depth, warmth, and personality to your portraits in an authentic way.
Tip #1: Isolate The Surroundings
Sometimes location gems are found in the most arbitrary places. Because of Instagram and Pinterest photography challenges, you've likely seen how abandoned warehouses can become inspirational locations. But, photographers have been using these unique spaces for ages, and know the exact technique to isolate the surroundings to find the ideal location. All it takes is creativity to separate a gorgeous background from its surroundings.
Tip #2: Envision The End Result
What do you see when you envision your portraits? If you spend some time thinking about it you’ll be able to describe the ideal place for your pictures. When doing this, you can also think about the location aspects that’ll make your photoshoot that much more special.
Tip #3: Think About The Location’s Practicality
There are 4 things you’ll need to think about when choosing a space:
a) Shade
Shade is important because it provides relief from the heat. However, in portrait photography it serves another purpose, as it eliminates harsh shadows and squinting, giving you a flawless outcome.
b) Restroom Availability
Logistically you’ll need a restroom nearby. It provides a space you can use for a change of outfit, but it can also be used for its intended purpose.
c) Space
Is the space you’re thinking of crowded? Is there adequate space to set up for a photoshoot? To get the best shots you need a space that doesn’t have too much foot traffic and has sufficient space to set up your shot.
d) Requirements For Use
Many popular spaces (like parks) require that you have a permit to take professional photographs. Keep this in mind when scouting for a location.
Tip #4: Choose A Spot With A Lot To Offer
For this step, do the isolation technique in reverse. Instead, of focusing on one area in an otherwise overlooked destination, look at the location in its entirety. How many spaces within that location will you use (or can you use) to take the portraits you’ve dreamed of? Also, think about taking pictures from various angles as this will be a tremendous help.
If a location has more than one spot that’s perfect for taking pictures you’ll have far more fun taking the photographs, besides, you won’t have to go far to bring to change the dynamics of the picture.
Tip #5: Lean On Your Professional Photographer's Expertise
